From hot weather to visas and vaccinations, there are some important things to know when travelling to South Australia.
Chances are you’re looking forward to the sunshine and beaches.
In South Australia, our summers are hot. It often soars above 35° Celsius (°C). That’s 95° Fahrenheit! Make sure you wear a hat, sunglasses, adequate clothing and sunscreen of at least SPF 30+. Drink plenty of water.
Swimming safety
For your safety, surf lifesavers patrol many beaches throughout South Australia. If you go to the beach, swim between their red and yellow Surf Lifesaving flags.
Electricity
Australia's electricity voltage is 240 volts AC. Some large hotels have power outlets at 110 volts AC. If they don’t, buy a small 110 volt transformer and a plug conversion kit.
Health and emergency
In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, call 000 for fire, police and ambulance assistance. From mobile (cell) phones, it's 112. For non-emergency police attendance, call 131 444.
Vaccinations
Australia has health care agreements with several countries but check this before you leave home. Always have appropriate travel insurance.
Are you from a yellow fever infected country or zone? Have you visited one within six days before entering Australia? If the answer is yes, you will need vaccinations. If not, no vaccinations are required.
Travel information
Australia’s official language is English. Many immigrants also speak their native language. Do you need an interpreter? Call the 24 hour interpreter service on 13 14 50 (from within Australia).
For safety, travellers flying to and from Australia may only take small quantities of liquids (maximum 100ml) in their hand (cabin) baggage or on their person.
You’ll need a valid visa for Australia. For short-term tourist entry, try an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). With an ETA, there is no need for you to complete a visa application form. You must apply for visas from outside Australia.
Customs
If you bring goods into Australia, you may have to pay a customs duty and sales tax. You can however bring in a number of goods tax free as hand luggage. Declare monetary amounts of $A10,000 or more (or the equivalent in foreign currency) upon arrival and departure. Certain foods, plants, weapons, firearms and drugs are subject to controls or prohibition.
When you buy goods in Australia, you may get a refund on the taxes. Claim your refund at international airports or cruise terminals when leaving Australia.
