Clare Valley Cycling

Go for a spin

Take it seriously or just have some fun. Either way, there’s plenty to keep you pedalling.

Cycling the Riesling Trail, Clare Valley, South Australia

The Riesling Trail is a favourite, linking local towns, passing restaurants, cafés and cellar doors. Cycle it in under three hours or complete it in stages. Three "Loop Trails" return you to your starting point, without having to backtrack.

Recreational cycling at its best

Put some extra kilometres on your cycle computer and see more of the sights. Signs mark distances, directions and services.

The trail has a compacted surface and easy gradient. It’s fine for cyclists of all levels. There are picnic spots along the way and storyboards, so you can learn about the local history.

Start from signposted side roads in each town or even between towns. If you’re looking for distractions, there are plenty of detours. Stop at a nearby cellar door and taste some wine.

Save your energy for the trail. There are nearby car parks in Clare, Sevenhill, Watervale and Auburn.

The Riesling Trail and Rattler Trail

The Rattler Trail is an extension of the Riesling Trail. It was opened in 2010 and runs from Auburn to Riverton. It passes vines, farms and landmarks. There are public toilets in local towns and nearby car parking in Riverton, Rhynie and Auburn.

The fun doesn’t stop when you reach Riverton. Ride through the unspoilt Gilbert Valley on the Riverton Trails. These five trails lead past landmarks, wildlife and native vegetation, including pines, gums and sheoaks. Admire 360 degree views on the Lookout Trail. Stop and smell the roses on the Rhynie Trail. Visit Gilbert River Lake on the Duck Pond Trail.

The Mawson Trail

Mountain bike riders will relish the Mawson Trail. Ride the length of the Clare Valley from Kapunda to Jamestown. It doesn’t end there. The Mawson Trail incorporates both the Riesling Trail and part of the Kidman Trail as it bumps its way from Adelaide to the Flinders Ranges.

The Clare Valley lends itself to cycling. You don’t even need to bring your own equipment. Visit Cogwebs, Clare Valley Cycle Hire or Burra Bike Hire for everything you need.
