Flinders Ranges and Outback - Getting Here and Around
The wide open road
Travelling in the South Australian outback and the Flinders Ranges is an experience. As the wheels hum and the ancient landscape slides past, you’ll know you’ve never been anywhere quite like this before.
Driving is the best way to get around the Flinders Ranges and outback. You can also catch a plane, train or coach to reach this spectacular part of Australia. If you like, a tour operator will plan your travel and special experiences for you.
A road well travelled
If you’re driving from Adelaide, there are several ways to get to the Flinders Ranges. It depends on where you want to start and if you want to take the scenic route.
The most direct route is via Highway 1 (A1) to Port Augusta (300 kilometres). Melrose, 275 kilometres from Adelaide, is the gateway to the Flinders Ranges. Drive there via Crystal Brook and Laura (A1 and B82) or take a more scenic route through Gawler and the Clare Valley (A20 and A32).
Four wheel driving (4WD)
You don’t need a four wheel drive (4WD) to see the Flinders Ranges but it’s worth thoroughly checking your route before you leave. There are four wheel drives (4WD’s) for hire.
If you have a caravan, stay on the sealed road.
The Ghan train service travels through Port Augusta, on its way to Darwin. It departs Adelaide every Sunday and Wednesday between April and October with a different timetable at other times of the year.
Daily flights
There are daily plane and coach services from Adelaide to Port Augusta. There are flights to Coober Pedy every day except Saturday.
You can also see this stunning region through a range of charter tours. Try a scenic flight over the Lake Eyre Basin, which covers one sixth of the continent. There’s no better view of this weathered and carved ancient seabed.
A cyclist’s dream
The “Flinders Ranges By Bike” route uses parts of the Mawson Trail. It weaves its way from Wilpena Pound to Blinman.
