Kangaroo Island Beaches

Australia’s best beaches

After a Kangaroo Island holiday, you’ll have many more new favourite beaches. Vivonne Bay was once judged Australia’s best beach because of its long, curved shape and gloriously white sand.

Snorkelling, north coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia

The title of Australia's best beach could apply to many on Kangaroo Island. Some of South Australia’s best diving is also here with exotic sponges to see. You may even catch a glimpse of an elusive leafy sea dragon.

Swimming, snorkelling and sailing

It'll be hard to resist the aquamarine-coloured ocean surrounding the island. The North Coast provides safe swimming areas for all ages while the South Coast is more rugged with some areas requiring particular care.

Don the goggles and snorkel and take a closer look at what lies beneath the surface. There are several tour companies that will escort you to the prime viewing spots.

Jump on a sailing boat and relax with Nepean Bay offering year-round sheltered cruising for day trips. The North Coast is the place to go for longer voyages.

Dive in

Kangaroo Island boasts some of the best temperate-water diving in Australia. See beautiful coral and an abundance of marine life, including the elusive leafy sea dragoon. There are more than 60 recorded shipwrecks strewn across the ocean floor, some of which are accessible to divers.

Make sure you take a diving buddy or book an accredited diving charter or diving tour operator from either the east or north coast.

A fishing paradise

The island is home to some of the finest eating and game fish in southern waters - whether you want to dangle the rod from a jetty, cast a line from a beach or charter a deep-sea boat.

Pick up a free Kangaroo Island Fishing Guide for all the hot spots or check out Tour Kangaroo Island for more great information on fishing hot spots, rod hire, bait and tackle.

A fishing charter also guarantees a great catch. Several companies based on the island will take you out for a day (or longer). There's even one that starts at Cape Jervis on the mainland.

Eco friendly

Few places in the world are as committed to sustainable tourism the same way Kangaroo Island is. It's protected through conservation zoning, wildlife reserves and heritage listing and the locals are also dedicated to the cause.
