With the ocean right at your door, it makes sense to taste some of the spectacular seafood. Cast a line for a feast of fresh fish; snapper, garfish, tommy ruff (Australian herring) or King George whiting.

Get your feet wet and go diving for scallops and crayfish or rake the shallows for blue swimmer crabs.

Great pub food

Schnitzel, steak and salad share a menu with fresh seafood and traditional pub fare "down the local". Most towns have one and the doors are always open for a casual meal and a cool beverage or two. These pubs and restaurants cater for the growing tourist market, offering something special in a family friendly environment. 

Cafés and bakeries

Producing its own farm fresh vegetables, meat and eggs, the Ballywire Farm Tearooms between Edithburgh and Yorketown is a great place to drop in for quality, wholesome dining. For home-made gelato and ice cream, head to Moonta Mines and the Coffee Barn Gelateria.

Visit Ardrossan Bakery for fresh bread or Moonta's Cornish Kitchen for a tasty Cornish pasty.

If you're hanging out for a great coffee in the area, try Palate 2 Palette Gallery and Restaurant in Port Broughton, Meraki Sole in Ardrossan or Henry on George in Moonta.

Fresh seafood

Try the Inland Sea Restaurant, south of Warooka. It prides itself on stocking locally caught crayfish, snapper, King George whiting and other tasty meals, despite not being on the coast!

Buy fresh seafood from retail outlet, Gill Fisheries at Port Victoria. Look out for fresh oyster signs from Stansbury to Edithburgh. 

Plenty of wine

A hidden jewel in the heart of Yorke Peninsula, Barley Stacks Wines is the first commercial vineyard established in the traditional “barley belt”. The combination of rich limestone soil and the mild environment helps to produce strong grain crops and premium quality fruit.

Open seven days, Barley Stacks Wines offers tastings of their home grown Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and liqueur Chardonnay. It is just a short drive south of Maitland.

The seaside town of Ardrossan’s Emoyeni Wines is the ‘baby’ on the block, planting vines in 2000. Emoyeni Wines produces Riesling, Shiraz, Port and Sparkling Shiraz, and is open regularly throughout the year or by appointment.

Eat Local SA
