From the coast to the outback, every part of South Australia has adventure activities to get your adrenalin pumping.
Fly over Lake Eyre during rainy season. In the middle of the desert, it’s the largest lake in Australia but only fills with water occasionally. At other times, it becomes a giant salt pan, stretching across 9,500 square kilometres.
On foot
If you want to keep your feet on the ground, try hiking the Heysen Trail. The 1,200 kilometre track stretches from Cape Jervis on the south coast, to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges. Rest at one of the small bush huts or bed and breakfasts. Most visitors choose to walk a small section of the track.
Underwater
There are more than 200 known shipwreck sites along the South Australian coast. Drive to Yankalilla Bay on the south coast and dive through the wreckage of navy destroyer, ex-HMAS Hobart.
Try the Underwater Heritage Trail on Gulf St Vincent. The trail links four of the most historic wrecks: the Grecian, the Zanoni, Star of Greece and Norma, which all sank between 1841 and 1893.
Experienced divers may wish to try cave diving. South Australia’s Limestone Coast is home to hundreds of water-filled caves and sinkholes.
On water
Planning a river holiday? Hire a houseboat and explore the Murray River at leisure. See it faster on a jet boat or waterski. The Murray River is a playground for all sorts of sports, including fishing.
If you are staying in Adelaide, there are plenty of adventures close by. Swim with dolphins on a guided tour off Glenelg Beach. Kayak with dolphins at Port Adelaide or set sail at sunset aboard the tall ship, One and All.
By air
Go hot air ballooning over the Barossa Valley or Flinders Ranges. Sky dive over various locations.
In a cage
For the biggest adrenalin rush, see Great White sharks up close at Port Lincoln. It’s a full day trip, where you’ll see the sharks face to face from the safety of a diving cage. It’s worth it for the photos and bragging rights.
